Our Facilities

Safety is paramount at Pegasus. In the early stages all riders will be accompanied by a trained horse-leader and two trained side-walkers. The horse leader guides the horse using a lead rope. Our horses are carefully chosen for their temperament and their ability to take unusual or sudden movements in their stride. Our own purpose-built mounting ramp is used for both able-bodied and wheelchair bound riders. Wide enough to take the rider as well as assistants it brings the rider to the right height for easy mounting. The horse is brought alongside the ramp and an assistant stands on the offset block to assist the rider and make sure there is no danger of falling. Once mounted the horse can be led directly into the arena by our own entrance, wide enough to easily take horse rider and side-walkers.

The mounting ramp brings the rider to the correct height for mounting the horse, either from standing or from a wheelchair. The horse is brought alongside the ramp and held there by the horse-leader. An assistant stands on the offset block to assist the rider into position, another assistant on the ramp’s platform helps the rider to mount. Once the rider is securely seated the horse-leader will walk the horse forward and the two side-walkers will walk alongside to support the rider as necessary. A special handling belt is available for students who are liable to sudden and unexpected movement, it has grab handles to assist the side-walker to keep a secure grip if required.

Jacqui Mair, a Professor at the Savannah College of Art & Design generously paid for the lumber and hardware. Savannah Floor Covering Co Inc generously assisted with the non-slip covering which also protects the structure from weather and prolongs its life. Thank you!
